She turned to me and said softly

She was standing in the kitchen that morning, making our usual breakfast: soft-boiled eggs and toast.

Nothing about the morning seemed unusual at first. The house was quiet, the coffee had just started brewing, and I was still half-asleep as I walked into the kitchen. She was wearing the oversized T-shirt she usually slept in, moving around the stove like it was just another ordinary day.

Then she suddenly turned toward me with a serious look and said softly,

“You need to come here right now.”

I blinked, still trying to wake up.

The way she said it caught me completely off guard. For a second, I wondered if I was still dreaming. It was early, I had barely opened my eyes, and suddenly the morning had taken a very unexpected turn.

My mind immediately started racing.

Was this real?

Was I about to have the best morning ever?

Not wanting to question good luck when it shows up before breakfast, I quickly stepped toward her and gave the moment my full attention.

A little while later, feeling extremely pleased with myself but also slightly confused, I watched as she calmly adjusted her shirt and turned back toward the stove like nothing unusual had happened.

She simply said,

“Thanks.”

Then she went right back to checking the eggs.

I stood there for a moment, smiling but completely puzzled.

Finally, I asked,

“Okay… what was that all about?”

Without even looking up from the stove, she replied,

“The egg timer is broken.”
