Finding stale bread in the pantry can leave you with one big question: should you use it or throw it away?
The answer depends on one important detail: whether the bread has mold.
Stale bread is not automatically bad. It may be dry, hard, or less tasty, but that does not always mean it is spoiled. Bread becomes stale when it loses moisture and its starches change texture. That is why it feels firm or tough instead of soft and fresh.
If the bread has no mold, no strange smell, and no unusual discoloration, it can usually still be used.

Mold is different from staleness.
If you see mold on bread, even just one small spot, throw away the entire loaf. Bread is porous, which means mold can spread deeper than what you can see on the surface.
Do not cut off the moldy part and eat the rest. That can still be risky.
Moldy bread may cause allergic reactions, stomach issues, or exposure to harmful toxins. It is not worth taking the chance, especially for children, older adults, or anyone with a weakened immune system.
The Safe Rule to Follow
If the bread is just dry and hard, you can repurpose it.
If it has mold, smells odd, feels slimy, or looks discolored, throw it away.
Being careful with food is not wasteful. It is smart.
