A devastating mudslide in British Columbia has resulted in multiple fatalities after emergency crews recovered the remains of several victims from a disaster zone near Lillooet.
Authorities confirmed that search operations were conducted throughout the week following severe flooding and landslides that struck parts of southern British Columbia after intense rainfall swept across the region.
According to officials, one deceased victim was located on Wednesday, while two additional bodies were recovered the following day during ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.
Search Crews Face Dangerous Conditions

Emergency teams continued searching for a fourth missing individual believed to have been caught in the mudslide near Highway 99, also known as Duffey Lake Road. However, officials reported that difficult terrain, unstable ground, and poor weather conditions significantly complicated rescue efforts.
Law enforcement agencies, search-and-rescue teams, and recovery crews worked through hazardous conditions in hopes of locating survivors or recovering additional victims.
Officials later confirmed that the body of a woman had also been recovered earlier in the week, marking the first confirmed fatality linked to the catastrophic flooding and landslides that devastated parts of the province.
Authorities say discussions are ongoing regarding possible next steps after current search efforts were exhausted.
Highway 99 Remains Severely Impacted
The mudslide struck a section of Highway 99 south of Lillooet, trapping motorists and cutting off access to several areas. Large amounts of debris, mud, fallen trees, and unstable terrain continue to make the region dangerous and difficult to access.
Officials have not yet announced when the highway may safely reopen to the public.
Transportation disruptions caused by the disaster have also affected nearby communities, supply routes, and emergency response operations throughout the region.
Families Await Answers
Authorities are currently working to formally identify the recovered victims and notify family members.
The tragedy has deeply affected communities across British Columbia, where many residents are still coping with the aftermath of widespread flooding, evacuations, and infrastructure damage caused by severe weather.
Officials expressed condolences to the families grieving loved ones lost in the disaster, while also acknowledging the emotional strain faced by families still waiting for news about missing individuals.
“This has been an incredibly difficult year for many communities across British Columbia,” one official statement noted. “Our thoughts remain with every family impacted by these tragic events.”
Severe Weather Leaves Lasting Damage
Meteorologists say the flooding and landslides were triggered by intense rainfall that saturated already vulnerable terrain throughout southern British Columbia.
Experts warn that extreme weather events can rapidly destabilize mountainsides, especially in areas with steep slopes and limited drainage capacity.
In recent years, climate specialists have increasingly raised concerns about how severe rainfall events and changing environmental conditions may contribute to more frequent flooding and landslide risks in some regions.
Communities Continue Recovery Efforts
Residents throughout affected areas continue cleaning up damaged homes, repairing roads, and supporting displaced families.
Emergency officials are urging travelers to avoid restricted zones and remain alert for potential additional landslides or unstable ground conditions in nearby areas.
For many families, the disaster serves as a painful reminder of how quickly natural disasters can transform ordinary moments into tragedy.
As recovery operations continue, communities across British Columbia remain united in mourning those lost while supporting rescue crews and families still searching for answers.
